The US Volvo XC90 is already into the 2017 model year. That super base model (which is $50k and under) without the Thor’s Hammer drls is a majority of the 2016 Volvo XC90 T5 Momentums. Just under 1 in 5 of all 2016 XC90 trims are this nondescript variant. Luckily 3 out of 5 Volvo’s are the T6 models so we will have plenty of used XC90s with the proper lights. That said, if you don’t mind halogens you’ll be able to get these 2016 Xc90 T5s for around $30k in another 18 months since no one will want them used and those that bought them will be trading them in soon. Still tons of new ones on the lots though. Go check it out!

Volvos never really held value that great

But I’d rather buy a CPO. 7 year 100k mile warranty. Scheduled maintenance. Roadside assistance. And massive savings.

“Base model”

“$50k”

My internet is really crappy. No configurators for me tonite.

How far under $50k? Are we talking $35k?

Those 2016 models were/are between $43k to $50k MSRP from what I saw. The configurator will only be 2017s meaning you’ll get the old T6 styling as standard in the US. Thank the fact that around 60% of XC90 buyers spent $53k-$60k on the vehicle allowing Volvo to kill off that price leader and to offer even higher specs like that 500 lb-ft Polestar Optimazation Package and that 4 seater limo style concept they showed off. Success is a wonderful thing!

Don’t worry — the Mercedes GLC starts at only $63k

The mere suggestion of buying a new Volvo w/o the Thor’s Hammer headlights, makes me sad.

Have spent quite a bit of time in the new XC90 over the last months; probably the best ‘normal’ car money can buy; honestly

I think the SUVs and Cross Country models are going to change that trend if we are really going all the way to 2019 with economic growth plateauing around this current point in the US. That means everyone will have no problem spending $30k on used cars and a majority of these XC90s have an MSRP around $60k. So that will end up being around a 60% drop in value after 4 years (which isnt bad at all).

Do yourself a favor: don’t get on Zillow and look up houses within a 25 mile radius of Seattle.

Exactly why these models will be half their original MSRP in 24 months. They need to be cheaper than the new base XC90s with the proper headlamps, and cheaper than the CPO versions which will all have them! That means if you bought a brand new 2016 T5 Momentum today for $47k, your trade-in value will end up being around $28k in 24 months, maybe. That means $32k 2016 XC90s in two years that we won’t even want.

I kinda doubt fancy headlights or the lack thereof is going to change the resale value all that much. Used car values don’t really vary all that much on specific options unless it’s a particularly rare/desirable option.
